Santorini Shorts

One of my favorite designers just released a new pattern and I had the great opportunity to test part of it. I’m a huge fan of Lil Luxe Collection patterns. Jessica is so great at designing contemporary designs with great detail for our little ones. Her newest pattern, the Santorini Sunsuit and Shorts, does not dissapoint. The sunsuit is Aaaamaaazing and I can’t wait to sew one up for my daughter. This go around I tested the shorts and they are a great staple with a modern twist on a classic style.

The Santorini Shorts are a double layer short with a single pleat on each side and elastic on the back waistband sitting about an inch or so below the belly button. I sewed up my final shorts in a rayon twill that has the perfect drape for this pattern. Jessica recommends that you not use quilting cotton for this pattern and I completely agree. With the double layers and the pleats, the pattern needs a lighter weight fabric with good drape. I really love the look of rayon with this pattern, but I think a lightweight lawn would work really well and be easier to sew up too. I’m currently searching for the perfect summery floral lawn for the sunsuit pattern.

This pattern is fairly easy to sew up. I would say it’s an advanced beginner pattern. There’s no zips or buttons since there’s encased elastic on the back waistband. However, the shorts are not rolled hemmed, but have a bias facing instead. The bias facing on the hem helps the hem lay really nicely, but it does take a little more time than a rolled hem.

The tank my daughter is wearing in these photos is one I sewed up for her 2 years ago. It’s a self-drafted top and I had posted a free pattern of her size with a full tutorial. She had a 22″ chest at the time and now has a 23″ chest. It had a looser fit 2 years ago and now is a bit more fitted, but it definitely still works! Plus, it has held up great even with all the wear she’s done! If you would like to get to the pattern and tutorial click HERE.
